Introduction
Zircon and zirconia based chemicals play a key role in the field of major as well as small scale industries. there have been many improvements and developments in the field of manufacture of zirconia chemicals and its varied applications all over the world.
The demand for zircon and its products is on the increase all over the world and the gap between the demand and supply is said to be widening. In this context Indian zircon and zirconia industry have a major role to play considering the significant deposit that our country possess. Hence, an attempt is being made to focus attention on these aspects by organising this Symposium.
Major Theme and objectives
1. To review and discuss the latest developments in the exploration of zircon mineral.
2. To discuss the latest developments in the value addition of zircon.
3. To discuss about the the various applications of zircon and its products in the ceramic, foundry, refractory and chemical industries.
4. To discuss role of zirconium products in nuclear and electronic industries.
5. To discuss novel technologies in the zirconia applications
6. To review and discuss about development of byproducts of zirconia industries to minimize adverse impact on environment.

Brahmapur is a historical city located in south Orissa bordering with Andhra Pradesh, having peoples of all parts of the country. It is the epicenter of all educational , civil, cultural, religious, industrial and commercial activities in East-coast region. It has famous University, Medical college,Engineering colleges ,Fishery college and Many Govt. departments It is also known as silk city of Orissa, because good quality hand woven silk sarees are the main attractions. Famous sea beach Gopalpur on sea (15 km), the world famous Chilika Lake (50 km), the world famous Olive Ridley turtles’ nesting zone on the bank of Rushikulya River and along the sea beach (20 km), GoddessTara Tarini Temple(30 K.m) and Tapta pani Hot water spring (50K.m) are some of the main tourist attractions of this area. Brahmapur is also a big business and Educational centre of South Orissa.
Climate :The climate of Brahmapur during February is very pleasant with maximum temperature of 33 0C and minimum temperature of 15 0C .
Accommodation : A number of medium grade Hotels are available at Brahmapur and Gopalpur. The rent ranges from Rs.200 / to Rs. 1’000 / for single accommodation and Rs. 500 to Rs.2’500/ for double accomodation.
Accommodation can be arranged by us in advance on payment basis.
Transport : Brahmapur is well connected by road and rail. It is along Chennai-Howrah National High way (NH-5). Brahamapur is an important railway station on the Chennai-Howra Rail Route and all the trains stop here. The nearest Air Port is Bhubaneswar (180 km).and Visakhapatnam(260 km)

The Brahmapur Local centre of the Institution of Engineers (I) is one amongst the 94 Local/State Centres that are set up and functioning throughout our country, with Head Quarters at Kolkota having been set up under the Royal Charter under British Rule during the year 1935. The Brahmapur Local Centre ,IE(I) set up in the year 1996 at Brahmapur (Ganjam) is catering to the needs of Engineers of all disciplines both in Private and Public Sectors, located in the South Orissa districts of Ganjam, Gajapati, Phulbani and Boudh.The center is actively engaged in conducting various technical activities .
INDIAN RARE EARTHS LIMITED
Indian Rare Earths Limited (IREL) was incorporated on August 18, 1950 as a private limited company jointly owned by the Government of India and Govt. of Travancore, Cochin. Subsequently in the year 1963 it became full fledged Govt. of India Undertaking under the administrative control of Department of Atomic Energy. Govt. of India
It has one Monazite processing unit at Aluva (Kerala) and three mining & mineral processing units, at Chavara (Kerala), Manavalakurichi (Tamilnadu) and Chatrapur(Orissa).
OSCOM (Orissa Sands Complex) is located along the coast of Bay of Bengal (at a distance of 20 km from Brahmapur in Ganjam district-Orissa), started its commercial operation in 1986. OSCOM exports Ilmenite to countries like Norway, South Korea, Japan, Ukrain, Switzerland, UK and Germany. Other minerals like rutile, zircon, garnet and sillimanite are mainly consumed by the domestic market. OSCOM also operates one Zirconia Pilot Plant for producing ultra pure zirconia and other zirconia products.
IREL maintains leadership in mining and production of beach sand minerals. IREL is making profit for the last 6 years with its sales turnover reaching a peak exceeding Rs. 2600 million in 2000-01, with export component of above Rs.1000 million.

Guidelines for papers & posters
Authors intending to present paper in the Technical Sessions are requested to submit two copies(4-5 pages) of full paper(A4 size) with a soft copy(Floppy or CD) on the above themes on or before 10th January 2005 in the following format,MS word with default margin setup, Times New Roman Font 12 .Flow charts, equations, image and figures as per requirement
