he Brahmapur local center of the Institution of Engineers (I) is one of the 94th Local/State Centre that are set up and functioning throughout our country BHARAT that is India, with the main center head quarter at Calcutta having been set up under the Royal chapter under BritishRule during the year 1925. This Brahmapur Local center BLC,IE(I) was set up in the year 1996

At Brahmapur (Ganjam)  catering the needs of Engineers of all disciplines (nearly15 ) as Existing both in Private and Public sector including Government engineers , located in the South Orissan districts of Ganjam , Gajapati, Phulbani and Boudh. This is one of the four local

Centers beside one State center located at the state capital Bhubaneswar . The other three local centers are located in order of seniority at Rourkela , Sunabedha, and Angul.

The Brahmapur local center was inaugurated by Er. Muthu Raman, the M.D.of TISCO Of the then proposed 10 million ton export oriented modern steel plant being set up at Gopalpur on sea near Brahmapur during 1996. Er S.N.Panigrahy F.I.E  Chief Engineer(W.R), Retd. Of Govt. of Orissa was the first Chairman of this BLC, while Er. Sudarshan Panda MIE, a young and dynamic engineer working in th Auro Consulttancy of Pondichery was the charter Hony. Secretary. This duo along with a team of Executive committee members of various disciplines elected as per the IEI-Rules and Regulations, continued functioning gaining strength from the local engineer brothers and members, conducting the various technical activities of the center successfully with their experience. During the next term of two sessions of 1998 and 2000 , the same duo continued as Chairman and Honorary Secretary. With the departure of Er. S.N.Panigrahy to Bhubaneswar in the mid term, Er T.R.K.Rao FIE principal of Berhampur Engineering School (Retd.), who was a Charter Committee Member was installed as the Chairman for the remaining part of the term i.e., 1998-2000, where as Er. S.Panda continued as the Honorary Secretary. This team of Rao and Panda closed by the end of 2000 and a new team came up with Er. T.R.K.Rao FIE, continuing as the Chairman and Er. S.N.Rath, MIE, a retired Executive Engineer of R&B taking over as the Honorary Secratory. Currently for the term of the session of 2002 – 2004, a new team was elected with Er.P.Surya Narayana Rao, FIE, Additional Director of Industries and Technical Education, Orissa (Retd.) as the Chairman and ER. Raghunandana Muni, MIE, P.A. (Tech.) to the Suptd. Engg. Lift Irrigation of W.R Dept. of Govt. of Orissa was elected as the Honorary Secretary with the team of Executive Committee Members of around Twenty One including the Co-Opted two members and Ex-Officio four members. The center celebrates every year the World Telecom Day in collaboration with the BSNL Berhampur division, the World Environment Day, jointly with the I.R.E. Ltd. Mattikhalo, Chattrapur and the Water Recourses Day with the participation of the Water Resources Department for Govt. of Orissa.

During 16th February 2004 the BLC, I.E.I for the first time successfully conducted a ALL INDIA SEMINAR duly encouraged by the Chemical Engineering Division of the I.E.I Head Office on the topic “ROLE OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING IN UTILIZATION OF THE NATURAL RESOURCES” – jointly along with the Chemical Engineering Department of The Jagganath Institute of Technology and Management (J.I.T.M) at Paralakahemundi under Gajapati District Orissa.

A second all India seminar is also finalized to be held at Brahmapur in collaboration with the I.R.E (I)Ltd. A Govt. of India undertaking under the Atomic Energy Commission on the topic – “ VALUE ADDITION TO THE ZIRCON BASED CHEMICAL AND OTHER INDUSTRIES” on the 11th and 12th of February 2005 at. Brahmapur. According to the guide lines of the Institutions of Engineers (INDIA) circulated to all the local / State centers, the BLC of I.E.I has constituted an – “ ENERGY CONSERVATION MISSION” in this local center, involving many retired senior engineers who all are settled down at Berhampur and companies like SOUTH CO. etc. and Govt. Departments like Department of Energy and Public undertakings like GRIDCO. etc. This cell is functioning under the Chairmanship of Er. P.S.Rao, FIE, a Retd. Chief Electrical Engineer of Govt of Orissa  with Er.K.C.Jena. a retired G.M. of SOUTH CO. as the convener.

The first seminal of this cell on “ENERGY CONSERVATION MISSION” is being organized on the 9th October 2004, at Brahmapur under the auspicious of BLC-IEI and will be inaugurated by the Hon’ble Minister of Energy Sri Suryanarayan Patro of Govt. Orissa as the Chief Patron of this Energy Conservation Mission Cell. The various Dos and Don’ts that will emerge out of this seminar will be published and passed for the benefit of this state in general through esteem members of various domestic as well as industrial users of energy making them fully aware and knowledge of the importance of energy conservation and updating their knowledge in future, from time to time.

 The BLC-IEI has today a little more than 300 corporate member besides around equal number of Associates and other Senior Technicians and Technician Members. Presently this center is functioning in the premises of the Uma Charan Pattanaik Engineering School at Khodasinghi Berhampur, A proposal for transfer of a portion of unused peace of land of UCP Engineering School since inception 1956, facing serious threat from public encroachment is under the consideration of the Govt. duly forwarded by the principal for construction of a permanent building of this local center of IEI duly forwarded by the I.E.I Head Office. The BLC-IEI will be celebrating its 9th foundation day on 3rd November 2004, which is a continuous annual feature. Added of the other existing technical events mentioned above a new technical event known as the “WORLD HABITAT DAY 2004” will be celebrated from this session of 2004 on the first Monday of October each year as declared by UNO, failing this year as the 4th of October 2004 duly communicated by the IEI HQS.
